Josie turned and took a hesitant step back toward the darkness.
''No." Though the word was soft, the sound whirled around her like an autumn wind. Josie froze at the underlying command. "That door is closed to you. You must come to me now. Enter the light."
Turning back, Josie raised her hand and inched forward, drawn to the promise she sensed beyond the light. But a part of her was missing, and just before her fingertips touched the shadowed fingers, she jerked away with a soft cry. "I can't. I want my baby. If we both have to be dead, can't I at least have my baby with me now?"
The man's shoulders lifted and lowered with a deep sigh. "You will see your child in due time. This I promise. But first, there is something you must understand." He flexed his fingers in invitation. "Come, Josie. Trust me. I'll help you make everything all right once more."
Funny, she did trust him, whoever he was. How could she not? With one last lingering look back the way she had come, Josie reached out and took the offered hand, stepping forward to join the man within the colored light.
As she stepped through the doorway, the light became so bright she closed her eyes, relying on the hand she held to guide her. The man squeezed Josie's fingers in reassurance. Peace and joy flooded through her, warming and filling Josie's soul with love.
"You can open your eyes now," he said, his voice making her think of golden honey sliding across warmed bread.
